Some years back, I was sucked into the labyrinth of Indian Matrimonial laws and a false 498a in particular. To be fair, before it hit me, it was difficult for me to fathom the wide spread misuse of dowry laws and specially 498a in India.

Uniform Civil Code
There is a lot of debate w.r.t. Uniform Civil Code or commonly used in abbreviated form as UCC in media. Law commission has already sought comments from various stake holders about the same. Most political parties & groups are giving there say keeping in view what suits their own vote bank.
The primary goal of the UCC or any state for that matter is to ensure equal treatnet for all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations. Those who favour UCC, say that a well structured UCC would strengthen the fabric of our society by fostering national unity and a shared identity based on common principles and values. It would also bring gender equality, addressing any biases against women that may exist in current personal laws.
Those opposing UCC say that it would be crucial to respect the customs and practises of minority communities, safeguarding their unique identities & rights.
I believe that UCC should go one step beyond and simplify legal procedures and providing a single set of laws accessible to everyone at a single forum. It should also address the problem of multiplicity of litigation.
